GSM, (Global System for Mobile Communications) is the know-how on which wireless phones work throughout the Middles East, Europe, Asia, U.S., Canada and Africa. In case we want our cell phones to use in most places around the world, three perqui8si8tes are necessary – GSM phone, tri-band phone and unlocked triband GSM phone.
In spite of its support by many countries, GSM’s band differed. This means that the U.S GSM will not work in Europe and reciprocally EuropE GSM will not work in U.S. This problem is resolved by having a Triband GSM, which is also unlocked. This will ensure coverage in most areas of the world. In a nutshell, an unlocked GSM triband phone with necessary bands will be compatible with any GSM network throughout the world.
For frequent travelers, especially business class travelers GSM phones, which are easy to afford is the best option.. No matter wherever they are, contacting home is a distinct possibility with GSM phones, due to the present day technological advancements. These GSM phones are not only easily affordable but also quite safe and convenient. Also, we can buy different GSM phone brands like HTC, Pantech, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Audiovox, Philips, Siemens, etc.
SMS – Short Message Service, of GSM enables you to send/receive short text messages of up to 160 characters to and from other GSM cell phones. Most GSM services world wide support these SMS services.
GSM SIM card – GSM phones require a small electronic device, called SIM card, to be inserted into a predetermined slot in the handset. This SIM card stores the mobile number, phone book, and all other registration details. There are some GSM SIM card cards which have got access to over 160 countries and 320 networks.
Compatibility – The compatibility of the SIM card to GSM handset will have to be kept in mind. Over and above that, we should check with the supplier of the handset about any SIM card restrictions. We should also double check whether the GSM handset is of the current frequency for each of the countries to be visited by us.
Most of the world’s GSM networks operate at 900 MHz and 1800 NHz. But in order to use the handsets at U.S.A or Canada, we will have to acquire handsets which can operate at the 1900 MHz.
All the information regarding the country codes, frequencies, and GSM networks are available online, which has to be studied well in advance of our travel etc.
